Brief
History and Introduction
King Edward Medical
College, now upgraded to the status of a Medical
University can boast of providing a very suitable,
comprehensive hostel accommodation for its students
in close vicinity in the centre of the city. The
first building was ready for use in 1901. The
latest addition of a new hostel building at Hall
road in 1981.
It can accommodate
a total of 290 girl students in 136 rooms at Nabha
Road, and a total of 270 lady doctors in the female
internees hostel in Mayo Hospital, . All buildings
have a mess and common room facility.
The boys hostel
caters for the needs of students, internees ,
Postgraduate students and seniors residents. It
also provides accommodation to the students of
Physiotherapy as well as limited lodging facilities
for working physiotherapists.
It has a total
capacity to accommodates over 900 students &
doctors in its 6 buildings with 7 messes, facilities
of a tuck shop, washer man, Post office, squash
courts, swimming pool, reading / common rooms
etc., It has two mosques with a capacity of over
250 people.
The campus has
accommodation for the Chief Warden, Assistant
wardens and a separate accommodation for warden
of the Hall road hostel.

Room at Boys Hostel
The allied hospitals
provide hostels for the nursing students at Mayo
Hospital with a capacity of nearly 400. The lady
willingdon hospital has its own nursing hostel
for 82 resident nurses. It has a doctor’s
hostel of 40 rooms and accommodates nearly 80
doctors. All hostels have a mess, a common room
& sufficient wash rooms.
Development plans
for up gradation of existing facilities &
addition of New Buildings are in the pipeline.
OUR
HOSTELS
The construction
of the 1st Boys Hostel the Main Hostel started
in 1901. Later the construction of this Hostel
was suspended held over due to separation of Medical
School from Medical College. The School Hostel
was converted from Dormitories to cubicles in
1917 to make suitable residence for College Students.
Main Hostel has 96 cubicles and 16 bieater~ for
128 Students. It is mainly reserved for foreign
students. Brooms Hostel was completed in October
1927. It consists of 32 cubicles and 26 dormitories
for accommodating 136 students. The New Hostel
was rebuilt 1991.

C and D Blocks
were ready for accommodation in early part of
1959. C-Block has 75 cubicles while D Block has
50 cubicles.
The construction
of New Hostel started in 1971. After few interruptions
work restarted and 1st half was completed in 1974.
The Second half of the' New Hostel was completed
in December 1978

The Hall Road
Hostel was previously occupied by Fatima Jinnah
Medical College and when it owns boarding house
for F.J. was completed the Hall Road Hostel was
taken only by K.E.M.C. The old block has accommodation
for 113 boys, while the New Block - completed
in 1980- 1981 provides accommodation to 383 students.

Hostel
Wardens
The 1st Wardens
for Boys Hostel K.E.M.C was Dr. Yar Mohammad Who
remained in office for 20 years. Other notable
names among the Wardens of our hostel are Dr.
Ramzan Ali Syed, Dr. Abdul Aziz, Dr. Zafarullah,
Dr. Khalil Rana, Dr. M.A. Cheema, Prof.Shahbaz
Munir Raja, Prof. Muhammad Akram, Prof. Abdul
Qayyum and now Prof. Mahmood Shaukat
According to Mian
Abdul Karim, from disciplinary point of view the
most strict of them was Dr. Abdul Aziz Prof. of
TBCD).
Mosque
The present mosque
was built in early sixties after demolishing the
Broom Hostel latrines. Earlier only a single room
was available for prayers.
Canteen
and other facilities.
The canteen and
associated building was built in 1922-23. Laundry,
General Store, Tailoring Shop, and- Squash Court
started functioning in 1962. The famous Barber
of our students, Rashid Ahmad Jallandry used to
do his work on "out door basis" from
1952 to 1964 when he shifted to his new shop.
The covered swimming pool was built in 1937. It
was 1st of its kind in the city.
NEW NAMES
OF HOSTELS
In August, 1983,
King Edward Medical College, Lahore had completed
its brilliant traditions of One hundred and twenty
three years. In this long time there have been
a lot of changes in buildings, teaching staff,
and students. On the eve of this Annual Hostel
dinner there was another pleasant change.
College academic
Council and hostel administration have decided
to change the names of some hostels. These Hostels
have been named after some great teachers of this
institution. These names shall keep on refreshing
our memories of those great personalities to whom
we owe a lot.
Elahi Bakhsh Hostel (New Hostel)
Previous new Hostel
has been named as Elahi Bakhsh Hostel after the
name of Lt. Col. Elahi Bakhsh, M.D., M.R.C.P.,
M.R.C.S., I.M.S. He joined K.E.M.C in 1936 as
a Professor of Pharmacology & Therapeutics.
He was the first Pakistani Principal of the College
as he took the charge on the eve pf 14th August
1947
He retired from
service in September, 1959. During the 2nd world
war while he was a prisoner in Japan, He wrote
a draft of his monumental work on Medicine which
was published just before his death. He died in
April 1960, in Islamabad while working as a member
of Medical Reforms commission. In recognition
to his great services he was awarded "Sitara-I-Quaid-i-Azam"
in 1959.

Broome Hostel
Broome
Hostel:
Previous Broom’s
hostel will continue to be called after the name
of Lt. Col. H.H. Broome, C.I.E., F.R.C.S., I.M.S.
He joined this institution in 1908 as a Professor
of Anatomy. After-wards he worked as Professor
of operative Surgey. He remained Principal of
K.E.Medical College from 1923 to 1930. 'All these
years he worked zealously and built up the reputation
as a good teacher, excellent Surgeon and sound
Administrator.
Sardar
Ali Sheikh Hostel.
(C.Block) Previous
C-Block will be called as Sardar Ali Sheikh Hostel
after the name of Prof. Sardar Ali Sheikh. He
joined the College on
19.4.1947 as a
Demonstrator in the Department of Anatomy. He
then worked as a clinical assistant and later
on as Professor of Surgery. He completed his research
work in 1950 on the topic of "Surgery of
the Hyperplastic illeocaecal tuberculosis”
He remained Principal of this College from 15.9.1971
to 6.4.1973.

Hall
Road Hostel
Prof.
M.A.H. Siddiquie Hostel:
(New Hall Road),
New Hall Road Hostel has been named as Siddiquie
Hostel after the name of Prof. M.A.H. Siddiquie
He was the Prof. of Anatomy who organized the
Anatomy Department and its museum. He was then
appointed as Prof. of operative Surgery in July,
1948. He worked as Medical Superintendent of Mayo
Hospital in addition to his duties as Professor
of operative Surgery till August, 1953. When he
was deputed to Dow Medical College, Karachi.
M.A. Pirzada Hostel:
(D. Block), Previous
D. Block has been renamed as Pirzada Hostel after
the name of Prof. M.A. Pirzada .. He took the
charge as Prof. of Clinical Medicine in August,
1947. He was transferred from Glancy Medical College
Amritsar after the independence. He retired in
1958. Later on he worked as an Honorary Prof.
of Clinical Medicine. He was awarded Tamgha-i-Pakistan
in 1958 for his excellent services in 1958.
Muhammad
Shafi Hostel:
(Old Hall Road),
Previous old Hall Road Hostel is now Shafi Hostel
after the name of Prof. Muhammad Shafi, a great
Ophthalmologist. He was transferred from Nishter
Medical College, Multan to K.E. Medical College,
Lahore after Prof. M.H. Alvi a. This hostel has
been declared dangerous. In its place a new hostel
will be constructed for 150 students. This block,
when completed will have a Gymnasium, Mess, a
Hall, Roof top Cafeteria, Fruit shop and general
store.
