Brief
History & Introduction
Institute
of chest medicine is the oldest Institute of the
country. One of its chairs Professor Riaz Ali
Shah had the privilege of being personal physician
to the father of nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad
Ali Jinnah.
In
1946, the Institute was awarded Hassan Masud Suhrawardy
Challenge Shield for best work in India in tuberculosis
teaching, treatment and publicity. A Research
Center for Tuberculosis was established in the
Institute in 1970 in collaboration with the help
of Pakistan medical Research Council. The Institute
has 56 beds, among these almost 50% are reserved
for tuberculosis patients. Presently Prof. Shamshad
Rasul Awan is head of the Institution.

up-to-date spiral CT scanner with high resolution
computerized tomography and arterial blood gas
analysis facilities are available round the clock
in Mayo Hospital in the sister departments.
