Brief History and Introduction

The autopsy labs are constructed on modern standards keeping in view the academic requirements, desired state and public services and protection of the working staff. A view gallery is constructed for the medical students in one of the autopsy labs. These labs are provided with stainless steel autopsy tables for fresh dead bodies and porcelain autopsy tables for decomposed dead bodies. In addition to this they are furnished with positive pressure ventilation and closed water gulley system for drainage. Each lab is equipped with shadow less light, ice blue lights and ultraviolet sterlisation. A change room and lavatory are also provided. Storage facilities for dead bodies are provided. There are four dead body freezers with the capacity of preservation of 14 dead bodies. A cold storage is being constructed within the vicinity of the department. It is to be completed in the current year and holds the capacity of storing 80 dead bodies.

The museum of the department is the most modern one having wax models, wet specimens, instruments and other exhibits, thus imparting knowledge and contributing to other teaching and training facilities directed to the postgraduate and undergraduate students.

At the ground floor there are three autopsy labs, two for the fresh cases and one for the decomposed dead bodies. Radiology section comprising the office of Forensic Radiologist, X-ray rooms with attached dark room, store and waiting area. Besides there are offices for medical and paramedical staff and reception wing including record room.
At the first floor there are:
a) Lecture Hall (Air-conditioned) with the capacity of five hundred students, furnished with modern audiovisual arrangements.
b) Laboratories (Air-conditioned) comprising different working sections like Forensic biological, Forensic analytical, Forensic histopathology, Forensic biochemistry and Forensic anatomy. These labs are attached with preparation rooms and supplied with the chemicals, reagents, instruments and equipments depending upon the nature of work they deal with.
c) Offices for Professor, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Lecturers and Steno Office.
d) Conference room.
e) Washrooms.
Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, KEMU is engaged in providing 3 types of services.
a). Postgraduate and undergraduate teaching services. These are not only confined to KEMU but also to other medical institutions of the city as well..
b). Research facilities are available in the form of sample and data collection for the research workers in the department. Such facilities are extended to the postgraduate students of other institutions as well.
c). State and Public Services provided by the department round the clock are:
(i). Autopsy examinations. (Data of the workload attached)
(ii) Medicolegal examinations. (Data of the workload attached)
(iii) Exhumations.
(iv) Age certification.
(v). Dead body preservation.

History

The subject of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology was taught at undergraduate level before partition, but no regular teacher was posted/available before 1973. A part time teacher designated as surgeon medicolegal West Pakistan/Punjab used to deliver the lectures. The first regular teacher in the department at KEMC was Prof. Nasib R. Awan who joined in 1973 as a demonstrator, promoted to Assist. Prof in 1975 and resumed as founder Prof. in 1979. Initially the department was housed in a small room in Patiala block with only five staff members i.e. One Assist. Prof. with two demonstrators, one attendant and one sweeper. With continuous, persistent and untiring efforts of Prof. Nasib R. Awan for improving and upgrading the existing arrangements, the department from a single mortuary site has flourished to attain the present status. Now the department is staffed with one Professor, Two Associate Professors, Four Assistant Professors, eighteen Demonstrators, Four Medical Technologist and the establishment consisting of Stenographer, attendants, Accountant, Junior Clerks, Naib Qasid as well as necessary paramedical staff including Artist, Modeler, Photographer, Radiographer, Museum keeper, Morticians etc.

Until 1983 the autopsies were supervised and conducted by the office of surgeon medico legal Punjab, Lahore. At the end of year 1983 the autopsy work for the District Lahore was authorized to Dept of Forensic Medicine KEMC. In 1999 the responsibility of medico legal work done at A & E department Mayo Hospital, Lahore was also shifted to this department.

At present the purpose built building of the department is double storied with separate entry and exit for the public, police and medical students.

1). Common manners and modalities of unnatural deaths in Faislaabad (joint project with Punjab Medical College Faisalabad).

2). Homicidal deaths by fire arm in Faisalabad (joint project with Punjab Medical College Faisalabad).

3). Differentiation between antemortem and postmortem injuries by biochemical methods.

4). Use of enzyme histochemistry in identification of antemortem and postmortem injuries.
