BRIEF HISTORY & INTRODUCTION

The IT centre was established in Patiala Block in 1987 by the then Principal, Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed. Initially this centre had two PC, two printers, System with Unix Operating System consisting of four terminals. Prof. Nasib R. Awan was the incharge of the Information Technology Centre. Initially the admissions of all Government Medical Colleges of Punjab were carried out in this centre.

In 1994, the then Principal, Prof. Naseer Mehmood Akhtar, enhanced the Computer Center with his personal efforts by getting donation of six Pentium computers with Novel Operating System. In 1996 this centre received additional donations of six Pentium Computer from WHO by personal efforts of Prof. Rifat Nisar Ashraf COME coordinator.

In the year 2005 Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Hasan (S.I) brought the revolution in the field of Information Technology. He provided twenty P-IV latest computers with twelve laser printers to the basic departments and Computer Centre.

This IT centre is mostly used for administrative purpose, like admissions of Government Medical Colleges of the Punjab, Computer Training, Research work, Student attendance, Students / doctors transcript, students registrations. Apart from the administrative work, this centre has trained more than 500 doctors, nurses and para-medical staff of this College now University, Mayo and allied hospitals. Now this computer Centre is headed by Prof. Kamran Aziz, Head of the Department of Biochemistry.

This Computer Lab has very qualified and experienced staff i.e. Mr. Abdus Salam Tariq, Mr. Muhammad Hafeez who are running the Lab. every efficiently and in proper manners. Now this Lab has latest Pentium Computers and high speed printer. interconnected and also have internet facilities.

1. Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab:

In December 2001 the old graduates of KEMC (Alumni) dreamed to do something for alma mater and their young Kemcolians. The King Edward Alumni Association of North America (KEMCAANA) decided to establish a Computer Lab in King Edward Medical University, Lahore. The Biochemistry Department was generous enough to give the place for Computer Lab.

i. In March 2002 the designing and construction of the Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab was started. It started functioning in June 2002 within three months.
Initially this Lab was started with 10 systems with Internet facility.

ii. In December 2003 the Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab was extended by adding 10 more P-4 systems and Laser Printer facility.

iii. In December 2006 KEMCAANA member plan to upgrade and provide the computer Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab facility to other Department of KEMU and Mayo Hospital which is almost done.

Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab:

i. Renovation work: i.e walls paneling, roof sealing, Computer tables, Electrical & network cabling and Lighting work in new extension area.

ii. Addition of New Computers: Now main KEMCAANA Computer Lab has a total of 50 P-4 Computers.

iii. Server Machines: Two Dell Power Edge High Speed Server machines running in Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab. These servers machine have latest Operating systems:
 
• Red Hat Linux Enterprise Edition for Internet sharing and high level network security i.e blocking unwanted websites traffic.

• Widows 2003 Server for managing internal network computers and remote KEMCAANA Computer Lab computers.

These Servers machine remains 24 hours on to share internet facility and connectivity remote sites with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab.
UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply): Five UPS (5.0 KVA) have been installed to provide backup to all Computer and other equipment of Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, in case of power failure.

iv. Up-gradation of Internet Speed: This year KEMCAANA upgraded the DSL internet Bandwidth from 128 Kbps to 512 Kbps.

2. Anatomy Learning Center:

KEMCAANA 1980 batch has been established Anatomy Learning Center in the Department of Anatomy, KEMU this year.

This Learning Center has the following sate of the art equipment facilities that is:
i. Eleven Latest P-4 computers with LCD display.
ii. Nineteen executive Chairs and one central table.
iii. Multimedia Projector with resolution and Fix wall projection screen.
iv. 3-D Dye section licensed software for all computers to teaching the students.
v. Big collection of Models of human bodies.
vi. High speed internet connectivity also available.

This KEMCAANA Learning Center has also been connected through the wireless towers with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, KEMU.

3. KEMCAANA Computer Lab North Medical Ward:

KEMCAANA has established Computer Lab in the department of North Medical Ward consisting 7 computers capacity, four have been provided and functional, three will be provided after few months.

This Computer Lab has been connected through the wireless towers with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, KEMU.

This lab will facilitate to the doctors of all medical floor (Four Medical Wards).This Computer Lab has high speed internet connectivity through Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab.

4. KEMCAANA Computer Lab North Surgical Ward:

KEMCAANA has established Computer Lab in the department of North Surgical Ward consisting 4 computers, which have been provided and functioning.

This Computer Lab has also been connected through the wireless towers with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, KEMU.

This lab will facilitate to the doctors of all Surgical floor (Four Surgical Wards).

This Computer Lab has high speed internet connectivity through Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab.

5. KEMCAANA Computer Lab Psychiatry Department:

KEMCAANA has established Computer Lab in the Department Psychiatry consisting 4 computers, which have been provided and functioning.

This Computer Lab has also been connected through the wireless towers with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, KEMU.

This lab will facilitate to the doctors of Out Patient Block (OPD).

High speed internet connectivity also available.

6. Alam Bashir Kohli Memorial Computer Lab, Girls Hostel:

President KEMCAANA Dr. Ijaz Mahmood and his family donated Alam Bashir Kohli Memorial Computer Lab for Girls Hostel, KEMU.

This Computer Lab is consisting 10 computers and KEMCAANA is managing.

This Computer Lab is also connected through the wireless towers with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, KEMU for internet connectivity and to share the resources.

This KEMCAANA Computer Lab is facilitating to the all the boarders of Girls Hostels, KEMU & Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

7. KEMCAANA Computer Lab Boys Hostel:

KEMCAANA has also established a Computer Lab in the Boys Hostel, KEMU consisting 10 computers.

This Computer Lab will also be connected through the wireless towers with Main KEMCAANA Computer Lab, KEMU for internet connectivity and to share the resources.

This KEMCAANA Computer Lab is facilitating to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of KEMU & Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

8. Internet Facility for Basic Science Departments

King Edward Medical College Alumni Association of North America (KEMCAANA) has provided internet facilities to all basic science Departments of KEMU for research work.

Usage of All KEMCAANA Computer Labs

i) Academic Uses:

The undergraduate and postgraduate students update their knowledge in all medical subjects such as Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Neurology, Urology, Cardiology, Radiology, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery. Not only the M.B.B.S student but also students of other disciplines such as B.D.S, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy get great help and aid in their studies from KEMCAANA Computer Lab.

Classes are being taught through Computer in Biochemistry to the students of MBBS, BDS, and Physiotherapy. Students of other classes i.e. Physiology, Anatomy, Community Medicine get assistance from this Lab in the form of print outs of assignments, demonstrations and various other lectures pertaining to these subjects which are mentioned above.

ii) Research Work:
Research work allocated to undergraduate & postgraduate students especially FCPS, FRCS, MRCP, USMLE, M Phil, M.S, Ph.D and WHO research projects are carried out in the KEMCAANA Computer Lab.

iii). Digital Library and Online Resources

KEMCAANA computer lab is registered to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) Digital Library Program. Students and doctors can access online journals, books and other resources from different web sites.
iv). Medical Education:
Regarding the faculty members Computer Lab is of help in preparing their lecture and demonstration. The research and review articles which are published at the latest are available on the internet for various knowledge seeking and conducting various studies through this KEMCAANA Computer Lab. Various data pertaining to health problems are collected and compile through this computer Lab.

v). Admission in Foreign Universities

Through the Computer Lab lot of students/doctors get their admission in foreign universities (Baylor University, Harvard Medical School, Mayo Clinic, New York University School of medicine, University of Vermont College of Medicine, Yale University etc.) for electives and postgraduate training.

vi) Training of Computer Skills.

Training of different computer programs especially Biostatistics and research methodology. Students are practically trained how to operate computer, access to other computer and share data, download and save Medical research material from internet and to store these into their own folders. Particularly the basic skills of computer training are being taught over these compute which are in the computer lab so the proper functioning the computers is the basic necessity.

vii) Communication Skills:

Students are trained how to make contact with different research scientists through email and answer to these emails. In this way students have access to the renowned scientists all over the world.

Computerized Attendance Record:

Computerize database is being prepared for the management of the attendance of students and faculty members.

These Computer Labs are handled by an experience Microsoft Certified Systems & Network Engineer Muhammad Rashid Javed. He is very well versed with computer science. He not only handles the computer labs technically but also helps and guides the new comers in using the computers and collecting the research materials from Internet. Asif Iqbal and Farukh Javaid also contributing is this work.
