Brief
History and Introduction
Cradled
by Lahore City’s most recognized landmarks,
the Lahore Fort, Badshahi Moaque and Mina-i-Pakistan,
lies the Lady Willingdon Hospital, spread over
an area of 104 Kanals with a covered area of 193489
square feet.
In
1930 Tikka Devi Health Centre was opened as an
outpatient clinic for women. In 1933 the foundation
store of lady Wollingdon Hospital was Lady down
by Rtd. Col. S.N. Hayees who was the first Medical
Superintendent, of the hospital. He is also credited
for creating the pathology museum of this hospital.
The hospital was affiliated with the King Edward
Medical College, Lahore the same year. The hospital
has been a teaching institution since its inception.
The hospital attracts health visitor, nurses,
medical undergraduates and postgraduates for training.
There
is a long list of famous names who have been associated
with it over its 76 years history. Before independence,
col. Hyees and his clinical assistants, Dr. Deppolette
and Dr. Sant Ram Dhal, served with a missionary
zeal. Col. Sami ad Dr. Balqees Fatima was amongst
the first Pakistanis to be at Lady Willingdon.
Professor Ahmed Shafqat Yusuf Joined the Hospital
in 1948 as a clinical assistant, became Professor
in 1959 and retired in 1980 after being here for
32 years, probably the longest Association. Professor
Noor Ahmed Seyal made the hospital famous in the
sixty’s and seventy’s while the leading
names in gynaecology, le (late) Prof. Nasim Ara
Shah, Professor Iqbal Rashid Mian, Professor Fakhar-un-Nisa,
Professor Munawar Zaheen, Professor Saleem Akhtar
Mian, professor Saad Rana, Professor T. Malik,
Professor Fehmida Naheed, Professor Ghazala Mehmood,
Professor Rashid Latif khan, professor Rehana
Mehmood Malik, professor Shaheena Asif, Professor
Saeed, professor Zahoor, Professor Farrukh Zaman,
Professor Shahida Sheikh, Professor Nasim Niaz
have been associated with it.
LHW
is a combined maternity and gynaecological hospital
having 235 beds. Today there are three independent
unit each having three consultant, a senior registrar
and registrar, eight medical officers, and eight
house officers.
Professor
Yasim Raashid, Professor Ahmed Wasim Yousuf s/o
Professor Ahmed Shafqat Yusuf and Professor Tabinda
Rana are the present Professors/ head of respective
units.
Every
unit has prenatal, postnatal, surgical, isolation,
private and postoperative care wards. Two outdoor/
emergency days, two investigation days, and two
operation lists are allocated to each unit (over
the week). There is a heavy workload with about
800 deliveries, 3500 major and 9000 minor procedures
are performed annually in he hospital’s
two operation theaters and three labour rooms,
probably more than any where else in Pakistan.

A
full Fledged Model Family Planning Clinic is attached
to the hospital. The hospital also has a nursing
school, its own mosque, and drug store. There
is a single accommodation doctors hostel which
comprises 42 rooms and six residential flats.
There are 16 private rooms. These rooms are air-conditioned
and properly renovated. Thewhole hospital has
backup electricity generation and independent
water supply.
Since
last year, every department of the Lady Willingdon
Hospital has been repaired and renovated. A hostel
for nursing students is under construction and
hopefully would be accomplished in the current
financial year.
PC-I
for new operation theaters has been sent to Health
Department for approval. In front of lady Willingdon
hospital, there is historical building named Krishna
building where our non-gazzetted staff is residing.
This building is being renovated and repaired
for the last one month and whole expenditure is
being done through donation with our personal
efforts.
