KING EDWARD LITERARY SOCIETY 2008

ITNRODUCTION:

It is the oldest, largest and the most energetic society of the university. The students at KEMU have always had a good taste in art and literature. Owing to these reasons, the literary society has a very glorious, brilliant and unblemished record, in procurement of occasions to enhance literary interest of the students.

HISTORY:

Literary society was established on regular basis in 1958 with the name of ‘Literary-Club’. Dr. Anwar Sajjad, Dr. Tahir Saeed Haroon and Dr. Saleem-ur-Rehman were the pillars of the society at that time. But even before the establishment of the society, the Kemcolians played their key role in setting the trend for it. Amongst them, Col. Dr. Bhola Nath, Col. Dr. Khawaja Abdul Rashid and Dr. Shafiq-ur-Rehman are the prestigious names.

In 1970, the great literary personalities like Khalid Iqbal, M. Qamar-uz-Zaman, M. Yaqoob Qazi Col. Dr. Waheed Zaman struggled for promotion and further resurrection of the society. In 80s, Dr. Younis Butt, Dr. Tahir Saeed Haroon published their books. In 90s, a lot of literary work was done. Marjan Farooq Naeem, Sayyed Farhan Ahmad and Shoaib Alam are the bright names of that era.

In 2001, literary society organized Annual ‘Mushaira’ owing to hard work of Faheem Afzal. Bilal Paracha in 2003; Jurry Abbas, Kashif Nadeem, Jawad Tayyab in 2004; Shahzaib and Khalid Idrees in 2005;Mustafa Mumtaaz, Khalid Idrees and Adeel Qamar continued this tradition in 2006. These ‘Mushairas’ have always been appreciated in literary circles of Pakistan.

Events organized in 2008

2nd all Pakistan Mumtaz Hasan intercollegiate English poetry competition. As a token of gratefulness competition was dedication to the Vice chancellor King Edward Medical University Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Hasan. The Chief Guest Miss Shaheen Attiq Ur rehman, Minister of social welfare, women development and literacy Punjab 1999-2002 gave away the prizes.

In original category, Saad Sohail from SISA was 1st, Omar Akram Sahi of LGS johar town was 2nd and Gohar Maqbool from Allama Iqbal medical college 3rd while and abeer Mustafa from Aitchison got consolation prize.

In recital category, Shehryar Raheem from Aitchison was 1st, Hira Tariq from LGS 1-A1 2nd, Badar ud duja from SICAS 3rd while consolation went to Fatima Fayyaz of Resourse Academia
