Brief
History and Introduction
The department of Oral & Maxillofacial surgery
was established in June 1997 with an Assistant
Professor and two House Officer. The Department
is currently a 40- bedded unit, the largest of
its kind in Pakistan. It is currently located
in a temporary building and will be shifted to
a permanent place (surgical tower) I two years’
time. The Department has separate male and female
sections. It also has a Minor Operation theatre,
a Professor’s Office, a registrar’s
Office, a head Nurse Office, a duty Nurse office,
a duty nurse room, a duty doctor’s room
and a seminar room.
Among
equipment, the department currently has two vital
signs monitors which are usually used for the
critically injured patients. These are also used
to monitor those patients who have undergone major
tumour and reconstructive surgical procedures.
The Minor Operation Theatre is furnished with
all necessary equipment, i.e. an operating table,
a ceiling light, a sterilizer, a cautery machine,
a suction machine and minor surgical instruments.
The
Department has remained actively involved in teaching
and academic activities. Every year, lectures
are delivered to 4th year MBBS students of King
Edward Medical College University (Now University),
as a part of their general surgery and maxillofacial
surgery. The department also has an ever-increasing
presence of Post-Graduate Students. Currently,
the department runs two major postgraduate degrees,
the master of Dental Surgery (oral and maxillofacial
Surgery) and the Fellowship of College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Pakistan (oral and maxillofacial
surgery). The department also regularly holds
an annual 5-days postgraduate preparatory course
in the filed of oral and Maxillofacial surgery
in which students from all over the country participate.
For the last 9 years, the department has been
rendering invaluable services to the people of
this country in general and to the people of the
Punjab in particular services to the people of
the country in general and to the people of the
Punjab in Particular. The department gives 24
hours emergency cover to the head and neck trauma
patients brought to the emergency department of
Mayo Hospital Lahore. The department also gives
active cover, including surgical intervention
where required, to all surgical and medical unit
of the Mayo Hospital, Lahore. These include General
Surgery Unit, General medicine Unit, the Department
of Otorhinolaryngology, the Department of neuro-Surgery
and the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery. Since the Department is the only one
of its kind in the country which gives a 24 hour
emergency cover, it also entertains inter-hospital
calls from all the major hospital of Lahore, including
Lahore General Hospital, The Services Hospital,
Jinnah Hospital and the Sir Ganga ram Hospital.
