Brief History & Introduction

North medical ward or unit IV, is a relatively new ward located behind the Albert Victor Hospital. It is being headed by Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Haroon who jointed the unit in March 2005. There is a 20 bedded male and 16 bedded female ward with provision of 10 extra beds. There are 2 consultant rooms, a room for PG Students and House staff.

It hosts state of the art academic facilities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At present, 29 postgraduate doctors are completing their training in this unit.

The unit handles medical emergency patients 36 hours a week and offers outpatient services twice a week.

House officers and postgraduate students for FCPS, MRCP and MD are taught at the beside, on rounds and in clinical meeting on a daily basis. An elaborate teaching program has raised the merit of the unit form number 4 to 2 amongst the house officers in the recent selection. A regular postgraduate teaching program is carried out with structured training towards higher examinations. A variety of books and journals are available on line. They are encouraged to use the guidelines for medical management of emergency and admitted cases which has been developed by the unit.

The unit is also engaged in teaching the nursing and paramedical staff at undergraduate level once per week.

A large cillection of software is available with the latest commercially available CD of textbooks of medicine. The unit is engaged in publishing regular updates and grand rounds on the website developed and maintained indiginously. All lectures given by the unit are available online before hand. A tracking system incorporated in the website, monitors student learning. A credit system is available for working on the web and completing various modules and self assessment programs.

6. Use of interferon in acute hepatitis C infection.

7. Use of lispro as nebulized insulin

8. Low dose Ramipirl in Diabetic patients with microalbuminuria.

9. Use of trimetazine for improvement of LVF.

Services

The North Medical Ward regular care of out patients twice a week and . 36 hours emergency on call once a week. There is a 1 in 4 rota of special Sunday emergency on call.

1. Acute medical and out patients admission are managed.

2. State of the art endoscopic facilities are available.

3. Regular upper and lower GI endoscopies are carried out twice weekly.

4. procedures like sclerotherapy and band legation are carried out as necessary.

5. The unit not only caters for its admitted and out patients but entertains call for other departments.

6. Regular teaching is carried during these procedures to the attending PG and house officer on duty in the section.

7. Echocardiography is carried out of inpatients on demand basis.

8. Bronchoscopy is carried of in patients on demand basis.

9 The unit specializes in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching through computer based interactive teaching modules in all subjects of medicine and clinical examination. There is also indigenously developed management module which outlines the latest treatment of over 200 diseases. A collection of thousands of pictures of clinical signs, heart and respiratory sounds, ECG, X-Ray and Video help run our teaching programs.
