Brief History & Introduction

Mayo Hospital was established 1871 as part of clinical teaching component of King Edward Medical College, Lahore. During 19th century, Eye & ENT were under a single professional chair In 1939, Lt. Col. Dick was the first Ophthalmologist to establish an Eye / ENT ward (Lahore Ward). The Second chair of professor was created in 1973 and third chair was created in 2000.

In 1948 Eye and ENT were separated and professor Ramzan Ali Syed became the first head of Ophthalmic Unit. The purpose built Institute of Ophthalmology was built in 1984 to met the ever increasing demands of teaching and training, the undergraduates, Postgraduates and to cater for the ophthalmic needs of ever increasing population of Lahore and Punjab. Institute of Ophthalmology has 168 beds with diagnostic facilities of Glaucoma, Squint, Vitreo Retinal diseases, Laser Facilities, Specimen Museum, Refraction, Conference Room for CME on weekly and monthly basis. Laser therapy, B-scan, Biometry Hess Screen and Visual Fields are being done routinely.

Prof. Mumtaz Hussain is the head of eye Unit-II which was established in 1976. He joined the department as professor of Ophthalmology on 11-12-2003

Teaching Programs
Postgraduate Programs

i) Weekly seminar Saturday morning at 8:30 A.M. for post graduate in preparation for their final post graduate examination (FCPS, MS, MCPS, DOMS, FRCS)

iii) Daily ward rounds, discussions for residents
iv) Daily clinical training of mid level eye care personals Ophthalmic technician, Refractionists, Optometrist, Orthoptist, Ophthalmic technologist and Ophthalmic Nursing from Punjab Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology (PIPO).

Services
Laser therapy, B-Scan, Biometery Hess Screen and Visual Fields are being one routinely.
Providing consultation to sister departments of hospital.
