Introduction Of Various Subspecialties & Departmental Sections

Trauma Section.

This section includes Male, Female & Pediatrics units. It caters for patients coming from all over Pakistan & Afghanistan particularly Punjab. As a result of ever increasing traffic, Law & order problems, mechanization and industrial injuries, the No. of complicated Mutilating Trauma has become a leading cause of mortality and morbidity of modern life. Although this is just one area of whole orthopedics but it is so dominating that our major work load is because of this.

Ilizarov Section

In order to cope with complicated trauma, limb deformities & tumor management, we have developed the most efficient and reliable system of ilizarov External fixation. This system was originally developed in Russia and is in our practice since mid 90s. This facility has enabled us to deal with complicated trauma, developmental and congenital deformities. It has also helped us to save the limbs which mould other wise were difficult to salvage.

Paediatric Section

Pediatric orthopedic section is one of the oldest in Punjab and is serving since several decades when there was no such facility available around. Although with passage of time this specialty has been developed on its own and separate hospital and departments has started functions. This unit is still dealing a good number of patients with various problems including pediatric Trauma, infections, deformities and tumors.

Spinal Cord Injury Unit.

Spinal Cord Injury is one of the most devastating injury occurring to the humans resulting in disablement of great magnitude. Majority of the victims of spinal paralysis are at the prime of their youth and go into despair as a result of complications (Medical, Psychological Social & Vocational) resulting from inappropriate and non-specialized management. The only way to persevere their lives and give them a purposeful creative attitude is possible by managing the spinal cord injury in a comprehensive care system at specialized centers, which has been proved beyond doubt.

The department of Orthopedics has started a dedicated service for Spinal Cord Paralysis to improve the quality of care and follow up services. It will serve as a training center for medial and para medical staff as well as a role model for other institutions in the country.

For the acute stage management ten beds has been reserved for spinal patients with a back up of fully equipped intensive care facility of two beds. It has its own separate medical and para medical staff under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Saeed Akhtar, Assistant Professor Orthopedics, trained for the comprehensive management of Spinal Cord Injury. The Rehabilitation facility is in the process of development. Hoping this nucleus will develop into a center of excellence at par with similar centers in the developed world.

Radiolody Section

Orthopedic patients are most difficult to transport to remote radiology department for radiological evaluation. In order to facilitate the admitted patients. The department has developed its own radiology section since 1978. We have two latest model image intensifiers in operation theatre and 100 MA portable X-Ray machine for ward. All the patients are benefiting from this facility. For the purpose we have two Radiographers, one for ward the other for O.T. one dark room facility also available in the section.

Physiotherapy Unit

Physiotherapy facility was developed / started in 1976. It gradually developed over the years to the extent that it has started functioning independently in collaboration / Liaison with orthopedic department.

Rehabilitation Unit

The school of orthotics and prosthetics was developed by the orthopedic department and progressed to the extent that it has started functioning on its own in collaboration with the parent department.

Operation Theatre

Separate dedicated orthopedic O.T is located with in the orthopedic department premises. Theatre Suite consists of 5 op. theatres, Sterilization room, Surgeons office, Sister Office & Separate office for paramedics, There is Central Gas supply, Recovery area for patients. Each O.T consists of one OP. table specially designed for orthopedic surgical procedures. One anesthesia machine, monitoring system, diathermy, Sucker & other latest equipments. U.V. Lights are also available in most of the theatres. there is separate staff for each OT including Nurses, O.T.A. & sweepers etc. sterilization Room has autoclave machine & hot air oven & three technicians.
