Brief
History and Introduction
In
October 1860 a Medical College for northern subcontinent
was established and was named as “Lahore
Medical College”. It was situated in artillery
barracks at the present site of Government College
Lahore, with hospital located in a foreign stable,
near the present Tibbi Police Station, Taxali
gate. Dr. J.B. Sceiven of general hospital Calcutta,
was the Principal.
In
1916 the separate departments, of Physiology and
Community Medicine were constructed as the Bahawalpur
block.
At
the time of partition, the Physiology and Biochemistry
department of King Edward Medical College Lahore
has been headed by the following Professors, in

At present, the department of Physiology, KEMU
is headed by Prof. Muhammad Akram, Professor of
Physiology. The rest of the faculty member consist
of one Associate Professor and 8 demonstrators.
The subject of physiology provides the foundation
over which the empire of clinical subject is created.
Research in Physiology is delivering sweeping
new approaches to medicine.
Consequently
the under graduates presented original articles
in the 7th, 8th and 9th Pakistan Physiology Society
conferences (Lahore Chapter) 2001, 2004 and 2006.
Secondly, this department has introduced S.U.R.A.
(Society of Undergraduates Research Activity)
(in 2001). It will go a long way in developing
research inclination in the undergraduates and
hopefully, the department of Physiology K.E.M.U.
will continue its academic and research activities
in collaboration with other basic departments
in future.
The
department is actively involved in teaching of
MBBS, BDS, Bsc, Physiotherapy, and M.Phil Physiology
students. There are over 20 research projects
completed under Prof. Shahnaz Javed Khan while
the department has published 25 articles in indexed
medical journals of Pakistan. The commendable
services of Professor Allamdar, Professor Aziz
Khan & Professor Nusrat Waqar can not be overlooked
in raising the standard of the department.
Since
1995, Physiology department has introduced energetic
involvement of 2nd year MBBS students in simple
research projects.
The
physiology department with WHO collaboration would
launch 1997 (Community Oriented Medical Education)
pilot model project at KEMC, Lahore for the next
five years. The training of teaching faculty of
COME project in collaboration with the departments
of preventive Paediatrics and physiology of KEMC
have conducted seven sub-workshops, for far.
