Brief History and Introduction

The Academic department of Psychiatry at King Edward Medial University / Mayo Hospital Lahore has a short but impressive history. It was founded in 1964 on out patients basis. In 1975 in patients facility was also started and 1989 under Professor I.A. K. Tareen. This department is the first and the largest purpose build psychiatry unit in the country. On an average 12 thousand patients are seen every year. The department does have components of adults psychiatry, old age psychiatry, adolescent and 14 bedded model drugs abuse treatment and rehabilitation Center. The department also runs a day hospital and has a purpose built laboratory and well established library. The staff consist of one Professor, one Associate professor and three Assistant Professors, one senior registrar two registrar and several medical officer, house officer alongwith six clinical psychologist and two social worker. The department is activiely engage in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme in Psychiatry Psychology and continue medical education programme for general practitioner. The highly experience with postgraduate qualification provide tertiary care service to the large population of not only Lahore but patients come from all the country. The department has very active research programme and several research papers has been published in national and international journals. Several collaborative research projects specially with the University of the Leeds has been completed.

Department have run a very extensive rehabilitation programme for the victims of recent earth quake and several councilling skills workshops have been conducted for the volunteers for the capacity building.
