Brief History & Introduction

The Radiology Department is as old as the application of X-rays to the diagnosis of ailments in the sub-continent of India. The nucleus of the department of radiology was established with the installation of X-ray machine in the first decade of 20th century. In 1939 more equipment was added and the main building of X-ray department consisting of two rooms was constructed. These two rooms still form a part of the present department. In 1947 this was all which was inherited. Subsequently the equipment was changed by a more modern version and the building also expanded.

Since late 70’s the radiology department has been given a professorial chair. The first professor to head the department was Professor Rasheed Ahmed Mian. With his efforts Professor R.A. Mian succeeded in expanding the department and creating posts of associate and assistant Professor along with a angioradiologist.

The department subsequently has been divided into Main section, Emergency section, and Out Patient section. Radiological Services are provided to all clinical department. Facilities in Main section included conventional radiography, TV fluoroscopy, Cine radiography, topography, mammography, angiography, myelography, and ultrasonography. In addition to basic ultrasonography now the department has facilities for interventional work. The department has also acquired a C.T. Scanner and colour doppler ultrasound units.

The department is headed by Professor Nawaz Anjum. The other staff includes an associate Professor and an assistant Professor and 12 medical officers. Both undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Radiology is actively carried out and many research papers have been published.

Services

The Department of Radiology offers diagnostic and therapeutic facilities to a large number of patients. Following facilities are offered:

• X-ray facilities are being offered to patients including all sorts of x-rays, Chest , Abdomen, KUB, Bones and all other region. Fluoroscopic facilities with contrast studies and therapeutic procedures are done regularly. Averagely a total number of
• 125,000 X-rays are done annually.
• Ultrasound with Color Doppler is offered to the patients on daily basis. Obstetric ultrasound and General ultrasound including the interventional ultrasound, biopsies ,drainage procedures and catheter placements either for nephrostomy or other reasons.
• Ultrasound of inpatients, out patients and of emergency patients is done.16000 sonograms and 1000 Color Doppler are being carried out annually.
• A large number of C.T.Scans are done on latest helical CT. CT guided biopsies and procedures are done. Approximately 10,000 CT scans of various regions are done annually.
