Brief History & Introduction

Basic theme of establishment of Medical Social Services Project is to help an individual in getting medical treatment. In these projects, A Medical Social Officer first of all records the case history of a patient. He/She tries to know the social aspects of the disease through applying professional knowledge. He / She guide the respective doctors while prescribing the treatment. A medical Social Officer provides financial assistance / Medicines to an individual through charity. Philanthropy and zakat grant.

Medical Social Services Project, Mayo Hospital, Lahore is functioning since 1957. Staff position of the project is a under:-

Mayo Hospital, Lahore is the oldest and biggest hospital of Pakistan. It consisted of 2000 Registered beds. There are 24 Specialized units working in Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Role of Medical Social Officer

Medical Social Officers are performing following duties in Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

1. Medical Social Officer establish relation between patient and doctor.

2. Medical Social Officer, guides the respective doctor about the social economic condition of patient, so that doctor may be able to prescribe medicine in a better way.

3. A Medial Social Officer Rehabilitate the patient in different ways i.e. providing free medical assistance, vocational training and employment opportunities.

4. A Medical Social Officer works for the welfare of unknown and unattended patients.

5. A Medical Social Officer works for the rehabilitation of disabled persons.

6. A Medial Social Officer also performed duties in rehabilitation of mentally and physically retarded.

7. A Medial Social Officer also provides free medicines to both the Muslims and non-Muslims. It is providing free medicines to the destitute and non-affording patients through zakat funds, Pakistan. Bait-ul-Mal Fund, District Bait-ul-Mal, Patients Welfare Society, Donations.

8. A Medical Social Officer guides the needy patients in getting medical treatment from other Health Institution.

9. A Medical Social Officer celebrate National and Religious days in Hospital with the assistance and collaboration of Hospital Administration and Patients Welfare Society.

10. A Medical Social Officer always remain in touch with the patients through recreational / vocational activities.

11. A Medical Social Officer also provided free ambulance and diet facilities to non-affording patients.

12. A Medical Social Officer pay home visits to the selected patients.

13. A Medical Social Officer guides the relatives and family members of the patients in rehabilitation of patients.

14. A Medical Social officer keep himself in touch with the patients even after having health / physical treatment.

15. Free Medical Treatment Examination and Investigation of deserving Patients on the recommendation of Medial Social Officer.

16. Medial Social Officer arranged a fee medical camp within and with out side of the Hospital.

17. Medical Social Officer is working as General Secretary of Health Welfare committee. He/She utilizes the Zakat Fund according to the instructions of Central Zakat Council and keeps and maintain the record of Zakat Fund.

18. Medical Social Officer is working as a General Secretary of Patients Welfare Society. He/She establish liaison between members of patients Welfare Society and Hospital Administration.

19. Medical Social Officer collects donations for deserving patients from Different sources.

20. Medical Social Officer is providing training of Social Case Work to the students of Social Work/Sociology Department of Punjab University, Lahore.

Patients welfare Association

Patients Welfare Association came into being in 1963 and Register on 11th January, 1964. patients Welfare Society, Mayo Hospital, Lahore is providing social, psychological and financial Assistance to poor needy patients.

WORKING OF PATIENTS WELFARE ASSOCIATION.

1. Patients Welfare Association is providing free medical assistance to the disabled persons.

2. Patients Welfare Association Mayo Hospital, Lahore is providing free optical to the poor and deserving patients.

3. Patients Welfare Association provides free of cost ambulance services to the poor and destitute deceases families.

4. Patients Welfare Association, Mayo Hospital, Lahore is providing vocational training facilities for Women of the surrounding area of May Hospital, Lahore. Almost 15 to 18 Females getting vocational Training from this Center every month.

5. Patients Welfare Association, Mayo Hospital, Lahore is providing Day Care Center facility to working families of the hospital.

6. Patients Welfare Association, Mayo Hospital, Lahore is running a guide service to the patient coming for treatment from far flung areas of the country. For this purpose a guide is deputed by Patients Welfare Society to assist Patients. 30 to 40 patients are taking guidance daily.

7. Patients Welfare Association, of this hospital is providing wheel chair with in hospital premises.

8. Facility of photocopy of the documents of the patients and staff of the hospital.

9. Patients Welfare Society is also bearing the expenses of stationary for Utilization of Zakat Fund.

10. Patient Welfare Association is also providing services in search of attendance of Unknown Patient.

Future Plan

1. Patients Welfare Association, Mayo Hospital, Lahore will construct a “Welfare Home” for the un-known and un-attended patients of Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

2. Patients Welfare Association, Mayo Hospital, Lahore intends to purchase its own Ambulance for needy patients.

3. Patients Welfare Association, Mayo Hospital, Lahore will shortly start a compute training programme for the employee of the Hospital.

4. Patients Welfare Association of this hospital will also start a public call office for the patient to provide them telephonic facility within the Hospital premises.
5. Ultrasound facility for outdoor patients.

Brief of Health Welfare Committee Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Medical Social Officers are performing their duties for zakat fund utilization. They keep and maintain record of Zakat.

1. Central Zakat council issued Rs. 130,00,000/- per anum for General Patients including Cancer, Hepatitis, Cardiology, Psychiatry, T.B. surgery, Diabettics Etc. This grant is issued in two equal installments amounting to Rs. 6500000/- for six months.

2. Central Zakat Council, Islamabad issued Rupees 100,00,000 per anum Zakat grant only for Urology patients. This grant is issued in two equal installments amounting to Rs. 5000000/- for six months.

3. About 350 to 400 patients per month getting free medicines from General Zakat Fund and almost 60 patients getting free medicines from Urology Fund of the Heath Welfare Committee of Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Budget Allocation

Yearly total grant for General Patients Rs. 130,00.000/-

Yearly total grant for urology Patients Rs. 10000,000/-

Both grants received in two equal installments for six months.

Procedure for preparation of Zakat Card/Issuance of Zakat Medicine

1. Istehqaq Form duly signed by the Chairman of Local Zakat committee.

2. Copy of N.I.Card.

3. Case History Form

4. Call to MSO in respect of Zakat Patient for concerned consultant.

5. Patient Chart /OPD Ticket, After completion of all above said documents, Medical Social Officer issue Zakat Card to the patients for obtaining the Zakat Medicine.
