Brief History and Introduction


Thoracic surgery is one of the oldest surgical specialties, which was established in 1959 in Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Over the period of time, all over the world this specialty gained its importance for reducing the high mortality and morbidity rate in chest injuries caused by an increase in automobile accidents and injuries caused by criminal assaults.

Keeping in view the importance of this specialty, a teaching unit of Thoracic Surgery was established in 1995 at King Edward Medical College, Lahore, by creating a post of Assistant Professor with a Senior Registrar and 3 MO’s working under him. The aim of establishing this teaching department was not only to provide specialized treatment to the needy ailing humanity, but also to teach and train increasing number of under and post-graduate students in this field.

Introduction Structure and Services

18 bedded teaching unit of Thoracic Surgery started functioning at King Edward Medical College, Lahore in 1995. In addition to one operating day and two OPD days a week, the unit also gives emergency cover twice a week.
On elective operation lists all kinds of pulmonary, mediastinal, esophageal and other procedures of Thoracic surgery are done, which include

Department of Thoracic Surgery

Lung surgery.

Resections for: TB, malignancy, bronchiectasis.
Trauma
Bullectomies.
Decortications.

Oesophageal surgery
Oesophagectomies for: cancer, corrosive strictures.
Achlasias
Tracheo-esophageal fistulas.
Trauma

Pleural surgery
Pleurectomies

Chest wall surgery
Resection and reconstruction
Correction of pectus deformities

Diaphragmatic surgery
Diaphragmatic hernias
Eventration

Mediastinal surgery
Mediastinal pathologies
Thymectomies
Mediastinotomies

Bronchoscopies

Upper GI endoscopies

Lymph node biopsies

Chest intubations and aspirations

While on call for A&E department, the unit manage cases of thoracic trauma conservatively or surgically, which include firearm injuries, bomb blast injuries and road traffic accident.

Annual Targets

With the passage of time the work load of this department has increased many folds, because of its role in teaching and training increasing number of under and post-graduate students and also in providing specialized surgical treatment to the needy patients.

On an average to 250-350 patients are admitted per year where as 250-300 operative procedures ( both major & minor) are done per year.

This work is done on weekly one elective list and by the only consultant in the unit. If the number of consultants are increased in the unit the work out put can increase by many folds.


Research Projects

There are few research projects in the pipeline. Apart from these projects, postgraduate students are enrolled to do post graduation in the field of thoracic surgery, for which separate research work is to be done by them.

Teaching Programme

Apart from imparting knowledge to undergraduates, the subject is taught to post graduates during ward rounds and during regular weekly discussion sessions on different topics of Thoracic Surgery. A once a week meeting is also held between the department of thoracic surgery and department of chest medicine, where options of medical or surgical treatment is discussed for patients with chest diseases.
