Brief
History and Introduction
The
Department of Urology, King Edward Medical College,
Lahore is the oldest institution of its kind in
Pakistan. Department was created in 1962. It was
started in the upper floor of Eye & ENT outdoor
with 25 beds with operational facilities in East
Operation Theatre. Prof. M.I.K Anwar was the first
professor of Urology. Medical Staff at that time
was comprised of Professor, Senior Registrar,
Registrar and two House Surgeons with equipment
consisting of one cystoscope only. In 1967 the
Department was shifted to Lahore General Hospital,
with other specialties and was shifted back to
Mayo Hospital in presently Cardiology Department.
In 1972, Dr. Fateh Khan Akhtar took over as the
professor and head of Urology Department. He planned
for new department at present location and Department
was made functional in 1977. In 1992, a new theatre
complex and a new lithotriptor was added to the
existing building. Prof. Farakh A. Khan then took
over the charge in 1993. He made revolutionary
changes in the working of Department. Old theatre
block was converted into Nephrology section &
laboratory and the new theatre was made functional.
Kidney transplantation was started in his era
on regular basis. Lot of research and social work
was done during his era. Many M.S. Urology students
passed in his tenure. Prof. Sajjad Husain served
the Department from 2000 to 2004. PC-I for Modernization
of operation theatre and Up-gradation of Haemodialysis
& Renal Transplantation was prepared and approved
in 2004. Prof. Muhammad Nawaz Chughtai took the
charge in Sep 2004.
PC-I
for Modernization of Urology Operation Theatre
and Up-gradation of haemodialysis and renal transplantation
was followed vigorously and the civil work would
start soon. Renovation of the old department was
made from donation and air-conditioner facilities
for whole of department. Kidney transplantation
was started on regular basis and is made a routine
procedure. Minimally invasive procedures like
PCNL and URS and in situ lithotripsy for ureteric
stones are started. Radiology Section is made
operational. Laboratory section of Urology is
upgraded with new sophisticated equipment.
